Alright this is not a drill.

The default icewm desktop wallpaper is a bunch of Linux penguins. We need an artist to make an awesome (Open)BSD desktop wallpaper to donate to upstream so we can default to that instead.

Now I’m doing my happy dance... The new fan is in, and my laptop is both quiet and cool once again!

Teachers in the U.S. went from making 7.3% less than other college graduates in 1979, to making 21.4% less today. What used to make that trade-off work was good benefits, job security, and widespread respect for the profession. The first two of these are definitely under assault, and arguably the last as well.

Now it's quiet. Uh-oh...

Laptop fan sounds like it’s in a bad way. The replacement can’t get here fast enough!

Back to work today... Time to dig into all the stuff I was putting off until after Easter!

The dog bolted out the front door and led us on a chase across the neighborhood. He's safely home now, but that was a bit of excitement my Easter afternoon really didn't need.

I'm pleased to see this sign at a local park has been changed. Our family always ignored it. And in any case, the "residents only" restriction was always unenforceable under state law, due to a (wise and equitable!) state supreme court decision that held that all public parks are held in trust for the use and benefit of the whole public, and cannot be restricted to residents of the municipality.

Our family watched An American Tail last night. I hadn't seen the movie since I was in seventh grade, and I was pleasantly surprised at the message: immigrants come to America expecting a utopia, and are disappointed, but through solidarity and organized struggle they make a better life anyway.

"If two men in a world of more than 7 billion people can provide €300million to restore Notre Dame, within six hours, then there is enough money in the world to feed every mouth, shelter every family and educate every child. The failure to do so is a matter of will, and a matter of system."

Either the local DEA office is repeatedly calling me and my wife, or somebody's robo-dialling for a scam and spoofing the caller ID. I'm resisting the temptation to pick up and mess with them...

Exciting new federation failure mode: IPv6. Even IPv6 "only" servers may have 6to4 gateways. But federation requires two way comms for key exchange, follow/accept dance, etc. and IPv4 server can't reply to messages received from IPv6 only.

@chronicallymoe Jesus Christ Himself: want to know the odds of getting into heaven if you're rich? Imagine this literally impossible thing.

Americans: Ah but secretly this refers to this totally doable thing

Jesus: Literally sell all your stuff and give the proceeds directly to the poor.

Americans: actually that just means you should donate to your local televangelist.

Jesus: here's a story about a rich man who is in hell for being a bastard.

Americans: No U.

The only thing better would be getting it to open results in a dedicated tab. (This opens a new tab for each query.) If someone knows the appropriate Firefox remote magic to do this, I'm all ears.

@nextcloud Nice. FWIW bookmarks, history (and anything else) synced via #Firefox is end-to-end emcrypted, though. You can also send tabs to your other devices. Works quite nice.

A productivity boost for my exegetical work in vim: This makes '\g' open a web browser window with an analysis of the Greek word under the cursor...

:noremap <Leader>g "zye:exe "silent !xdg-open" . @z . "\\&la=greek"<CR>
