Digging into Svend Brinkmann’s “Stand Firm: Resisting the Self-Improvement Craze,” which I got for Christmas. It’s a delightfully cranky book, arguing against positive thinking, introspection, and the constant pressures toward a life of rootless adaptation and flexibility, and in favor of a Stoic revival of virtue, duty, and acceptance of adversity and limitations.
